around this time last year people finally started taking notice of the food-related issues in the upper northern reaches of Canada; consider this your reminder that even since then, juice is still $26 in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, and that the predominately indigenous communities in Canada’s North are forced to pay extraordinarily exorbitant prices for basic groceries due to structural inequity and the contemporary effects of ongoing settler occupation.

For people that think there is no racism in Canada

Food costs more in Nunavut because of how much it costs to get it there. Not because of some white conspiracy to destroy the indigneous people that reside north of the Artic Circle.

While, yes, this food is outrageously expensive — there is no way to get the food there and have it cost what you and I would pay in a grocery store here in the States or even what they pay in the southern parts of Canada.

Infact, in Nunavut there is no roads or railways entering the town from the south, so goods have to be flown in daily. It has been noted that it costs around 1 cent per pound to send items to places like Winnipeg, whereas it can cost up to $3.00+ a pound to send food by air to places in Nunavut. Not to mention the issues that come from storing non-perishable foods when it’s cheaper to send them up during the warmer season of the year.

You’re a very angry person, and I’m sure that to get that angry you’ve been wronged at some point in your life — and I’m truly sorry for that. As I’m sure you know by now, racism will never go away if it keeps being perpetuated. That will never happen as long as you mix facts with feelings.

Racism is alive, no doubt about that, and it’s never going to go away when people turn blind eye to facts and just point fingers.

Wake up.

Just thought I’d share this charming piece of graffiti from near my home.

By the way, this is the ONLY women’s library in the country, it has only women’s work in it and also serves as a sort of feminist museum. They’re affiliated with a university close by and hold regular events such as workshops and talks on subjects like the poetry of immigrant women of colour or the representation of mental health in women’s literature. Its also due to be closed down by the Conservatives.
